Category: Hunter Training

A list of quality of life improvements for your engineer. These are the items I miss when I am on my non-engineering toons.

Ghost Iron Dragonling
BOE trinket that has 3 cogwheel slots. Must have trinket for leveling level 87 alt.

Moll-E
Portable mail box good for farming engineers. Farm mats, then when bags get full mail it to alt.

Jeeves
Vendor, repairs, and a bank

Scrapbot Construction Kit
Summon when Jeeves is on cool down. Sell vendor greys and armor repair.

Gnomish Army Knife
See post

Teleporters
For traveling convenience.

Kalimdor
Dimensional Ripper – Everlook (Goblin Engineering)
Ultrasafe Transporter – Gadgetzan (Gnomish Engineering)

Outland
Dimensional Ripper – Area 52 (Goblin Engineering)
Ultrasafe Transporter – Toshley’s Station (Gnomish Engineering)

Northend
Wormhole Generator: Northrend

Pandaria
Wormhole Generator: Pandaria

Motorcycles
The first 2 person mount. Good for Battlegrounds and questing in Pandaria.

Alliance
Mekgineer’s Chopper

Horde
Mechano-Hog

Mist-Piercing Goggles
Good for the herbalist and miner for them extra minerals and herbs.

Electrostatic Condenser
For the mining, skinning, or herbalist engineer. This item allows you to collect extra Volatile Air while farming.

Zapthrottle Mote Extractor
The gas cloud sucker for them Outland and Northend Gas Clouds that produce extra mats for extra gold or crafting.

Thermal Anvil
The perfect item for the Blacksmiths, Engineers, and Miners. It basically lets you craft and smelt anywhere. There is no level requirement so anyone can use it. Especially good for your low level alts while you are leveling their professions.

Loot-a-Rang
Let’s you loot from a distance. A good time saver, you don’t have to run up to the corpse to loot. Especially useful for range dps or packs of mobs. Loot and mount then move on.

Blingtron 4000
You don’t really need to have this item as a Engineer. In fact, he is a little useless because the drop rate for the good stuff is so low. I do recommend seeking him out, don’t go out of your way, just check Stormwind or that City in Pandaria depending on your level, and do the daily.

The Blingtron 4000 Quest Package has a chance to drop a Fire Spirit that increases your skill of your primary professions by 4 points. Over the corse of leveling to 85, my rogue I got 8 free skill points in Blacksmithing and Engineering.

Well this should complete the list. Good luck farming the mats to craft these useful items.

Hey everyone,

I write posts for myself. Just kidding? I did start the blog on WordPress so I could keep track of all the hunter resources I would find on the web.  Now that baby is here(He is about 2 months old) and I have a full time job, my game time has whittled down to only Saturdays and Sundays.  This is a more of a exaggeration. I still play occasionally on the weekday.  My raid days are over.  My gaming high is limited to one or two 5 mans, which I usually do on my rogue, maybe some dailies on my main, and tiding up some achievements until MoP comes out.

The blog is more like a forth priority after the wife, the baby, and my game time.  There wasn’t really much to report. No gear lists to make, no interesting tames, and for whatever reason the beta client did not like me.  It’s okay. I didn’t have time to play on the beta and I didn’t feel like doing things twice. So here we are:

Hunter Glyphs and their changes

Frostheims preparation guide for Patch 5.0.4

I do recommend getting any glyphs that you are missing in your spell book. For your hunter, Vendor your melee weapon if it is soulbound. For any melee class who could hold a relic, or whatever else those lesser classes, like rouges would use, vendor that shit too.  I will miss seeing a staff or stick on my back but range weapons just look cooler.  What else was on my list?  Oh, really start to decide which hunter pets you might want to let go, I take it back, release all but your spirit beasts.  BM is supposedly the best spec out there.  I would also make one spirit beast a cunning pet for PVP, another tenacity for tanking and solo-fun, and the third one for PVE.

BTW, my brother just told me that the patch is going to take about 6 hours to download. Go figure.

Baby is doing fine.  He is about 12 lbs now.  I couldn’t have asked for a more loving and caring wife.  For a girl who did not want to have kids, she is doing a great job.

I’ll report more later(about the game changes). If you look at my trend of blog posts, I usually report things when they go live.

‘Til next time… (which is hopefully tomorrow, or sometime sooner than 2 months)

The pics are up. The quote says it all about this set and its look.

“we limited the use of dragon heads to the helm and chained leathery wings around the shoulders which gives the impression of a skeletal dragon crouching over the Hunter’s upper body. “

Reminds me of the Wrath of the Lich King Collector’s Edition Frosty pet and it resting on your upper body. This is actually a set I’m looking forward to collecting. The look is amazing! I do like the tier sets that do make you look like you hunted for it. So how does the Murloc set fit in? Did we go to Elwynn Forest just to hunt Murlocs? I’m pretty sure someone made a comic about that.

The bonuses so far are:

  • 2P — Steady Shot and Cobra Shot generate double the amount of focus.
  • 4P — Your Arcane Shot ability has a chance to grant 30% haste to you and your pet for 15 sec.

This set bonus just screams BM to me. Since when after patch 4.1 did our pets get buffs? I do feel this is more of a way for Blizzard to test a increase in focus regeneration and haste on Hunters and their pets. Why does the set bonuses scream BM to me? First of all my strongest attack, *cough* Kill Command, as BM is highly dependent on having enough focus required to cast it. The set bonuses will also allow me to reforge away from haste and more in to Mastery or Crit.

In the BM tree there are several abilities, besides Kill Command, dependent on Crit:

  • Killing Streak – 20% damage increase and 10 focus reduction to next Kill Command.
  • Invigoration – Self focus regeneration based on Pet critical hits.
  • Go for the Throat – Pet focus regeneration based on Your critical hits.
  • Sic ‘Em! – After Arcane shot critically hits, next pet’s ability costs 0 focus.

Mastery gets:

  • Kill Command – Especially useful for breaking Rageface’s rage.
  • Pet Auto Attack – Constant damage increased by Mastery.
  • Claw, Bite, and Smack – Constant damage increased by Mastery.

Basically you can build your hunter 3 ways(Crit, Mastery, or Haste) without the bonuses. If you manage to get your 4 set bonus for Tier 13, I would focus on reforging into Crit or Mastery. Dropping haste will be good but we still need people to test on the PTR. When the Theory crafters figure it out, I will post.

I just did a few target dummy test with a Synapse Springs and Ricket’s Magnetic Fireball macro’d into my shots and without.

#showtooltip Arcane Shot
/use 10
/use 13
/cast Arcane Shot

#showtooltip Cobra Shot
/use 10
/use 13
/cast Cobra Shot

#showtooltip Kill Command
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Charge
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Rabid
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Bestial Wrath
/use 10
/use 13
/cast Kill Command

I did 16k dps in about 2 mins with them macro’d to Arcane Shot, Cobra Shot and Kill Command.

Then did 17.5-18k dps in about 2 mins with them only macro’d to Kill Command.  So I got about a 2k increase in DPS by changing my macros.  I need to run more tests but I thought my initial test results were astounding.  I think we need to do more testing and brain storming on how to improve our DPS.  Especially BM since I tested this as BM.

This is my new defense macro.  You could use it when you are getting low on health and help out the healers. /use 6 is your belt enchant.  You could tinker Grounded Plasma Shield to your belt and use that to absorb some damage.  It helps in boss fights like in Blackwing Descent when you tackle Chimaeron and he deals Massacre to your whole raid or Halls of Origination when Anraphet does his AOE Omega Stance.

#showtooltip Stoneform(Racial)
/cast Stoneform(Racial)
/cast Deterrence
/use 6
/cast [target=player] Master’s Call

Tinkering Synapse Springs or Tazik Shocker to all your shots is standard.  /use 10 is the macro line needed to use either of these tinkers.  The cool down for Synapse Springs is 1 min so you could use it twice during the time you use a trinket like Unsolvable Riddle,

#showtooltip Arcane Shot
/use 10
/use 13
/use 14
/cast Arcane Shot

Not sure if there is any reason to have macros for some of the other on use items.  If I figure it out I’ll post them later.

EDIT:  Added in the new recipes added in patch 4.0.6.

No not cooking the hunter. I’m not a cannibalistic troll. Well here is a short list of cooking recipes that should be of a high priority for leveling and level 85 hunters. You use the new Chef’s Award obtained through the new cooking dailies from Stormwind or Orgrimmar. You can only stock up on 10 of them for now. I recommend stocking up before the Cataclysm release.

The list is going in a order that the vendor has them up for sale, which is the order in which they are obtained by cooking skill level.  Grab the ones that give you the most DPS first.

Agility is our priority stat and I recommend taking those recipes over the others.  I know some of us will want to take recipes whose meats are more accessible to us especially if you have a nice cooking tab in your guild bank.  Take them if those recipes are still useful to guild members.

Cooking Recipes easily obtained at skill level 450

Recipe: Lavascale Minestrone – See a nice boost to +90 mastery and +90 stamina with a fish recipe.

Recipe: Salted Eye – The Snake Eye recipe at +60 mastery and +60 stamina isn’t as good as the fish one. See I proved my reasoning.

Recipe: Broiled Mountain Trout – At +60 Haste and +60 Stamina, it is good for focus regen issues and faster shots.

Recipe: Lightly Fried Lurker – More crit is good.  This recipe gives +60 Crit and +60 Stamina.

Recipe: Seasoned Crab – If your shots are missing a lot use this recipe.  It gives you +60 Hit and +60 Stamina.

Recipe: Feathered Lure – You will need this to help you fish up the ingredients you need to help you level cooking.

Recipe: Lavascale Fillet – Huh? Expertise.  What Guntitan is nuts?  No.  You need this for Engineering’s Goblin Barbecue.  Get it when you get engineering at this point.  The Barbecue doesn’t give you any skill ups in cooking or engineering but good to have for raids.

Recipe: Highland Spirits – Anything that can help you level cooking is good.  Who would I be without a alcohol recipe?  The sober dwarf?  Now that’s just wrong.

Cooking Recipes obtained beyond skill level 475

Recipe: Tender Baked Turtle – Agility is our number one stat for every spec.  This recipe should be our first priority when we hit cooking level 475.  The recipe gives +60 Agility and +60 Stamina which will be great for leveling.

Cooking Recipes obtained at skill level 500

Recipe: Fish Fry doesn’t give us any stat boosts.  The recipe can help us level cooking if we do encounter Sharptooth while fishing.

Recipe: Scalding Murglesnout – You will encounter Murglesnout while leveling fishing.  It will help you recover health while leveling to 85.  No skill ups.

Recipe: Skewered Eel – At cooking level 500 this recipe is our first recipe we should get.  It increases Agility and Stamina by 90.  Until your guild gets 10,000 fish achievement you will be using this as a hunter for your food buff for raids.

Recipe: Baked Rockfish – This recipe gives us +90 Crit and +90 Stamina.

Recipe: Basilisk Liverdog – At +90 Haste and +90 Stamina, the recipe is good for more focus regen issues and faster shots.

Recipe: Grilled Dragon – Again, if you notice your shots are missing a lot, this is the food buff you want to level with if you can’t manage to get Hit from gear.  It gives +90 Hit and +90 Stamina.

Cooking Recipes obtained beyond skill level 500

Recipe: Fortune Cookie – Meh. They make you feel good. No skill ups.

Achievement Awards

Recipe: Broiled Dragon Feast – Do I have time for this? 5,000 feasts?  Goblin Barbecue is looking more and more attractive and it can help you complete achievement.  It’s a guild achievement.

Recipe: Seafood Magnifique Feast - Seriously, 10,000 fish?  It’s a guild achievement.

Novelty Items aren’t as important as the above but still fun for a Hunter and could help you level cooking

Recipe: Chocolate Cookie – Available at cooking skill level 505. Can help you level to 510.  Cookies!

Recipe: South Island Iced Tea – We don’t use mana anymore but sounds refreshing.  Especially after looking at the 10,000 fish achievement.  The recipe is available at cooking skill level 525.  No skills ups.

Get recipes based on stat priorities or on ingredients you have readily available to help you level the profession.  I hope this helps you focus on what recipes Hunters should obtain first while leveling cooking.

4.0.6 EDIT:  Added in Synapse SpringsGnomish Gravity Well and Big Daddy!

4.0.3 EDIT:  Added in Elementium Dragonling.

From Northend

First off, Northend and the Wrath of the Lich King expansion gave us wonderful new abilities through items and tinkering. With patch 4.0.1 engineering tinkering stacked with regular enchants and patch 4.0.3 dropped the stat increases from tinkering. For Cataclysm we are going to still be using our valuable on use items and tinkering.

  1. Jeeves, Scrapbot Construction Kit, Gnomish Army Knife and MOLL-E will still be in our bags. Engineers will still be using Wormhole Generator: Northrend to return to Northend for Cobalt and Saronite in Cataclysm for the still useful Tinkering abilities.
  2. For rocketchuting the Flexweave Underlay and Nitro Boosts will be useful for running away and cliff diving. Mind Amplification Dish and Frag Belt will still be fun for PVP. Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket, Hyperspeed Accelerators, and Reticulated Armor Webbing will be useful for DPS and soloing while leveling to 85 or until you get your engineering to 525.
  3. Goblin Beam Welder will be useful for healing our new Elementium Dragonling.
  4. Personal Electromagnetic Pulse Generator will still be there for us while we farm Mechanicals for engineering items.

Engineering 450 and beyond

  1. Handful of Obsidium Bolts will be used to level engineering and do damage until you max out the profession and get to level 85.
  2. Electrostatic Condenser will always be in our bags and will help us collect Volatile Air which we need for Electrified Ether.
  3. R19 Threatfinder and Safety Catch Removal Kit will be our first set of scopes we will be able to make. They will increase Hit or Haste and the one you use will depend on what you need at the time.
  4. Volatile Seaforium Blastpack will be there for us when we encounter lock boxes.
  5. High-Powered Bolt Gun will consume Handful of Obsidium Bolts to do damage. Too bad it doesn’t help us build large buildings.
  6. Lure Master Tackle Box and Heat-Treated Spinning Lure will allow hunters to stack on fishing supplies and farm fish for more gold.
  7. Elementium Toolbox help us carry around all our new engineering stuff.
  8. Elementium Dragonling will help us bring in the boss kills.  I macro’d it in my Kill Shot.  The 252 mastery is what really helps.  Plus the mats aren’t terribly hard to come by.
  9. Loot-a-Rang will make Dwarf hunters more fat.
  10. When engineers hit level 83 we want to be sure we can make our first engineering range weapons, Finely-Tuned Throat Needler or Volatile Thunderstick.
  11. Depending on if you are a Gnomish or Goblin engineer you can get Gnomish Gravity Well (as of patch 4.0.6 it is broken) or Big Daddy ( a new bomb).
  12. The replacement for Fish Feast is now a engineering made item called Goblin Barbecue.
  13. Hunters finally get a weapon enchant that procs with their range weapon called Gnomish X-Ray Scope.
  14. The new belt enchants, Cardboard Assassin, Grounded Plasma Shield, Invisibility Field, Quickflip Deflection Plates and the new glove enchant Spinal Healing Injector will help you level and solo content. The Tazik Shocker or Synapse Springs will be there for you to help kill new bosses in 5-mans and raids.
  15. Kickback 5000 and Overpowered Chicken Splitter will be our next set of range weapons from engineering. Pick the weapon that best compliments your racial ability. Dwarves hunters please use the gun over the bow. If you use a bow as a dwarf consider yourself a noob.
  16. Deadly Bio-Optic Killshades will be used until we get our Tier 11 helm. The best thing about these is that they can be socketed with Fractured Cogwheel, Quick Cogwheel, Rigid Cogwheel, and Smooth Cogwheel depending on what you need. Use a spreadsheet like femaledwarf.com to figure out which works best for you.  Here is a comparison between the 2 helms.

I really hope we get more schematics throughout the expansion. So far I’m loving the new things we are getting.

First.  Mania is a godsend and has been keeping track of all the pet changes that patch 4.0.1 has brought.  It’s been updated and is reflecting accurate information.  It’s not displaying old information from blue posts or data mined information from MMO-Champion.

Second.  Pets no longer display buffs or receive them but it appears that they still receive a stamina and strength from Spiced Mammoth Treats.

Third.  Raiding with my spirit beast or devilsaur is wonderful.  I worked so hard trying to find those rares and I finally get to use them to help me defeat the Lich King.  I hope these rares help me defeat more bosses in the future.

Using focus is a interactive process.  I’m constantly watching my focus bar and watching my shots.  Kill Command for BM hunters is like another shot and is number 2 on my action bar.  Moves like Fervor and Focus Fire should be used whenever you need to restore focus.

EDIT: Reflected the way my macros are in game as of 10/28/10.  Added some more explanation.

For all shots you are dropping Kill Command and Silencing Shot.  “/use 10″ is for you to use your gloves if they have Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket or Hyperspeed Accelerators tinkered into them.

Shots
#showtooltip Arcane Shot
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Bestial Wrath
/use 10
/cast Arcane Shot

For Kill Shot I incorporated the Dwarf racial Stoneform but any racial that gives a damage buff will work too. I also included Cower. You don’t want to have your pet miss out on a Kill Command because your pet died.  The Glyph of Kill Shot is a powerful thing to have so get it.

Kill Shot
/use 10
/cast Rapid Fire
/cast Stoneform(Racial)
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Cower
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Call of the Wild
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Bestial Wrath
/use 13 – Activates trinkets if they have a on use buff.
/use 14
/cast Kill Shot

For the Hunter’s Mark macro I included the target line to help us focus on our kill priority for some of the ICC fights.

Hunter’s Mark
#showtooltip Hunter’s Mark
/target Bone Spike – Lord Marrowgar
/target Blood Beast – Saurfang
/target Blazing Skeleton – Valithria Dreamwalker
/cast Hunter’s Mark
/cast !track giants

Disengage
#showtooltip Disengage
/cast Disengage
/use 15 - Nitro Boosts
/cast Aspect of the Pack – Sindragosa
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()

Master’s Call macro is more for PVP use.

Master’s Call
#showtooltip Master’s Call
/cast [target=player] Master’s Call

Misdirection
#showtooltip Misdirection
/cast [target=focus, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=focustarget, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=target, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=targettarget, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=pet, nodead, exists] Misdirection

For pet heals I added in Cower and HotP if you run with that talented.

Pet heal/revive
#showtooltip Mend Pet
/castsequence [nopet] Revive Pet
/cast [modifier:shift] Dismiss Pet; [target=pet, dead] Revive Pet; Mend Pet
/cast Cower
/cast [pet:spirit beast] Heart of the Phoenix

If you run with a spirit beast here is a macro you could have on your action bar to heal yourself with Spirit Mend.

Spirit Beast Heal to Player
#showtooltip Spirit Mend
/target Player
/cast Spirit Mend
