That’s right Karoma ate Skoll.  I was on my way to CoC(Crucible of Carnage), which btw gives good experience points for pets, to help my guildies when… I found Karoma.  What karma?

_NPCscan and Silverdragon went off and I dismounted.  That’s when Karoma one shot Skoll.  I couldn’t believe it.  I thought this must  be sign.  Karoma wants me to tame him and be my new spirit beast and DPS pet.  He was red and aggressive to me on my Beast Tracking and crazy huge compared to Skoll.  Before I could tame him I had to back off a little, Feign Death, Revive Pet, Dismiss Pet, then drop the Freezing Trap, and cast Tame Pet.  I was epic fast.

Then I specced him like so…

Karoma Spec (DPS, PVE)

The spec allows your pet to get to next add after the first one dies lightning fast or get to the boss when they jump or run far away.  The spec and logic behind it is awesome sauce and I take no credit.  Thank you Frostheim.  Karoma also moves so fast that he gets to the next boss before I can manually switch targets.  How amazing is that?

Skoll used to be my DPS 5-man heroics pet and I do believe this soloing spec helps the healers with healing my pet and myself.  This spec with Spirit Mend also allowed my pet to tank 3 mobs with Growl turned on, in a heroic after the tank and 2 dps died with the healer still up.

Skoll Spec (Solo, Pet Tank)

So why did Blizzard add more spirit beasts?  ‘Cause they are more leet than most non-BM hunters think.  It is time to re-spec you MM and SV hunters and tame one.

4.0.1 BM Hunter Macros

EDIT: Reflected the way my macros are in game as of 10/28/10.  Added some more explanation.

For all shots you are dropping Kill Command and Silencing Shot.  “/use 10” is for you to use your gloves if they have Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket or Hyperspeed Accelerators tinkered into them.

Shots
#showtooltip Arcane Shot
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Bestial Wrath
/use 10
/cast Arcane Shot

For Kill Shot I incorporated the Dwarf racial Stoneform but any racial that gives a damage buff will work too. I also included Cower. You don’t want to have your pet miss out on a Kill Command because your pet died.  The Glyph of Kill Shot is a powerful thing to have so get it.

Kill Shot
/use 10
/cast Rapid Fire
/cast Stoneform(Racial)
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Cower
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Call of the Wild
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Bestial Wrath
/use 13 – Activates trinkets if they have a on use buff.
/use 14
/cast Kill Shot

For the Hunter’s Mark macro I included the target line to help us focus on our kill priority for some of the ICC fights.

Hunter’s Mark
#showtooltip Hunter’s Mark
/target Bone Spike – Lord Marrowgar
/target Blood Beast – Saurfang
/target Blazing Skeleton – Valithria Dreamwalker
/cast Hunter’s Mark
/cast !track giants

Disengage
#showtooltip Disengage
/cast Disengage
/use 15 – Nitro Boosts
/cast Aspect of the Pack – Sindragosa
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()

Master’s Call macro is more for PVP use.

Master’s Call
#showtooltip Master’s Call
/cast [target=player] Master’s Call

Misdirection
#showtooltip Misdirection
/cast [target=focus, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=focustarget, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=target, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=targettarget, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=pet, nodead, exists] Misdirection

For pet heals I added in Cower and HotP if you run with that talented.

Pet heal/revive
#showtooltip Mend Pet
/castsequence [nopet] Revive Pet
/cast [modifier:shift] Dismiss Pet; [target=pet, dead] Revive Pet; Mend Pet
/cast Cower
/cast [pet:spirit beast] Heart of the Phoenix

If you run with a spirit beast here is a macro you could have on your action bar to heal yourself with Spirit Mend.

Spirit Beast Heal to Player
#showtooltip Spirit Mend
/target Player
/cast Spirit Mend

Notes

A few reminders:

  1. Dash is broken don’t spec into it.  In order for our Hunter to use Kill Command our pet has to be 5 yards from the mob.  Spec by adding a talent point into Natural Armor and sacrificing a talent point in Bloodthirsty for Charge.  Our pets talent trees should look like this spec.
  2. Hit cap has change and its now capped at 246 Hit.  It looks like its at 30 hit per 1% of hit rating.
  3. Everyone is still theory crafting.  All specs have about the same DPS.  I am not even worried about the other specs.  If you want to play MM or SV go for it.
  4. I spec like Frost.
  5. For stat priority its Hit > Agi > Crit > Haste.  For gemming its a little different.  For blue gem slots use Hit and Agi/Hit gems, you might only need 1 depending on your socket bonus.  I like to match socket bonuses so I have 3 Glinting Dreadstone on Guntitan right now.  Here are the blue gems you could use depending on what your hit is at without gems:  Rigid Stormjewel, Rigid Majestic Zircon, Glinting Dreadstone.  When it comes to gem slots always gem Agility and use Reforging to get the hit you need.  It is cheaper that way.  For red gem slots Delicate Stormjewel and Delicate Cardinal Ruby.  For Yellow sockets you can use Deadly Ametrine.
  6. For Reforging reforge into Mastery.  Its fun and not expensive at all.  Reforge Haste into Mastery.  Reforge Crit into Mastery if there is no Haste.  I reforged some of my crit into Mastery and only lost about 3% crit.
  7. Engineering tinkering is stacking with regular enchants.  For head slot put in both Mind Amplification Dish + Arcanum of Torment.  You can’t use the mind control if your pet is out.  For the hand slot use Hyperspeed Accelerators or Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket + Enchant Gloves – Superior Agility.  For the boot slot use Enchant Boots – Superior Agility + Nitro Boosts.  For your back slot use Enchant Cloak – Superior AgilityFlexweave Underlay.
  8. Our AOE is not broken.  Use Multi-Shot with Snake Trap, either fire trap and  a Worm’s Burrow Attack.
  9. Add Killing Streak to your TellMeWhen buff bar.

Dash is borked! Engineering enchants stack!

Dash is broken.  Don’t spec into it.  The spell disappears from your pet’s spell book on its own.

Engineering enchants stack and armory doesn’t work so I can’t show you out of the game.  Log onto Dalvengyr and I’ll show you.  I hope this change stays because Jewelcrafter’s still get kick ass gems in Blacksmith slots.  Enchanters get all the enchants plus the ones to their rings.  Its only fair that everything would start to stack.  I really hope it stays.  Engineering deserves it.

Beta is not canon. Everything pet related online is wrong.

Go into the game and start taming. Currently all of the sites I go to learn about Pets are wrong. Exotics have 2 abilities and a lot of them aren’t listed. More later…

Edit:

My world server for Northend is down.  So I can’t do this myself atm.  Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get to do it.

This is what killing with a gorilladin looks like… Dead bodies everywhere…

I’m bad at taking screen shots. I need to turn off Quest Helper and Omen Threat Meter and try to center my objects in between my menus.

Obtaining pet skills at level 40.

Aye!

3 pets do the trick!  2 zones or 1 zone.  You decide!

I love wolves but I also like cats so here is what I did to obtain pet skills for both.

WARNING:  These methods will be become obsolete when WoTLK comes out.  You’ve been warned.  Now back to your regularly scheduled blogging.

In Feralas tame a Longtooth Runner (level 40 -41) to obtain pet skills Bite (Rank 6), Dash (Rank 2), and Furious Howl (Rank 3).  I kept him.

In Stranglethorn Vale tame a Elder Shadowmaw Panther (level 42 – 43) to obtain pet skill Prowl (Rank 2).  Then go for the big kitty.  Introducing the King of all cats, King Bangalash (level 43).  Tame him to obtain pet skill Claw (Rank 6).  He also teaches Dash (Rank 2).  I kept him, too.  If you’re only leveling with a cat then just skip the wolf.

Level 40.

Aye!

I hit level 40 and I don’t know where to go next.  Any suggestions?  I know I’ll be gathering pet skills once I hit level 43.  (I’m going to save me the trouble of traveling between continents) I’ll go after King Bangladash for Claw (Rank 6) and Dash (Rank 2).  For Prowl (Rank 2), I’m going after Elder Shadowmaw Panther (level 42 – 43).  I really need to know where I should go after that.  What areas give good armor as drops or quest rewards?  Please comment.

About Obtaining Prowl (Rank 1).

Aye!

Go back to Arathi Highlands. That’s where we got Bite (Rank 5). Follow the main road west.

When you hit the road that goes south, follow it to enter Stromgarde Keep. There’s a vendor there that sells a book to get your first aid to a higher level. Head back up to the main road and follow it west until you enter Hillsbard Foothills. Keep going west.

In the middle of Hillsbard, follow the road south to Southshore and get the flight path. Go back up to the main road and follow it west. Go up the mountains and enter Alterac Mountains. Look for the Mountain Lion and tame it. Now go somewhere safe. There might a lot of Horde in the area so I went back to Booty Bay.

What is this picture? You ask. I went into Alterac Mountains via Tarren Mill. It takes you to the Ruins of Alterac which is full of Ogres. There I got ganked by a few Horde. Multiple times!

When I finally resurrected I went around the north side of the mountains, down the shore, went past Dalaran. I found the Mountain Lions and got ganked by a few of them.  3-on-1 with no pet.

I resurrected back in the middle of the Ruins of Alterac. This is where the horde kept ganking me. That’s when I decided to explore the area as a ghost. Big mistake! REALLY BIG mistake!!! I got caught between some barrels in the Castle in the Ruins of Alterac. Which, by the way, this area must have been a beautiful Alliance town at one point in WoW history.

I opened a GM ticket. Went on General chat (/1) and called for help. Eventually a Priest came and resurrected my body back at the spot that I died. I caught a Mountain Lion and hearthed back to Booty Bay.

Learning Prowl is easy. Just keep using it until you learn it. See I learned it in Booty Bay next to the Flight Master. You don’t have to be in combat or level your pet. Just feed it so it doesn’t run away.

P.S.

A special thank you to Priesstess for resurrecting me.
