Cataclysm: Cooking Hunter

EDIT:  Added in the new recipes added in patch 4.0.6.

No not cooking the hunter. I’m not a cannibalistic troll. Well here is a short list of cooking recipes that should be of a high priority for leveling and level 85 hunters. You use the new Chef’s Award obtained through the new cooking dailies from Stormwind or Orgrimmar. You can only stock up on 10 of them for now. I recommend stocking up before the Cataclysm release.

The list is going in a order that the vendor has them up for sale, which is the order in which they are obtained by cooking skill level.  Grab the ones that give you the most DPS first.

Agility is our priority stat and I recommend taking those recipes over the others.  I know some of us will want to take recipes whose meats are more accessible to us especially if you have a nice cooking tab in your guild bank.  Take them if those recipes are still useful to guild members.

Cooking Recipes easily obtained at skill level 450

Recipe: Lavascale Minestrone – See a nice boost to +90 mastery and +90 stamina with a fish recipe.

Recipe: Salted Eye – The Snake Eye recipe at +60 mastery and +60 stamina isn’t as good as the fish one. See I proved my reasoning.

Recipe: Broiled Mountain Trout – At +60 Haste and +60 Stamina, it is good for focus regen issues and faster shots.

Recipe: Lightly Fried Lurker – More crit is good.  This recipe gives +60 Crit and +60 Stamina.

Recipe: Seasoned Crab – If your shots are missing a lot use this recipe.  It gives you +60 Hit and +60 Stamina.

Recipe: Feathered Lure – You will need this to help you fish up the ingredients you need to help you level cooking.

Recipe: Lavascale Fillet – Huh? Expertise.  What Guntitan is nuts?  No.  You need this for Engineering’s Goblin Barbecue.  Get it when you get engineering at this point.  The Barbecue doesn’t give you any skill ups in cooking or engineering but good to have for raids.

Recipe: Highland Spirits – Anything that can help you level cooking is good.  Who would I be without a alcohol recipe?  The sober dwarf?  Now that’s just wrong.

Cooking Recipes obtained beyond skill level 475

Recipe: Tender Baked Turtle – Agility is our number one stat for every spec.  This recipe should be our first priority when we hit cooking level 475.  The recipe gives +60 Agility and +60 Stamina which will be great for leveling.

Cooking Recipes obtained at skill level 500

Recipe: Fish Fry doesn’t give us any stat boosts.  The recipe can help us level cooking if we do encounter Sharptooth while fishing.

Recipe: Scalding Murglesnout – You will encounter Murglesnout while leveling fishing.  It will help you recover health while leveling to 85.  No skill ups.

Recipe: Skewered Eel – At cooking level 500 this recipe is our first recipe we should get.  It increases Agility and Stamina by 90.  Until your guild gets 10,000 fish achievement you will be using this as a hunter for your food buff for raids.

Recipe: Baked Rockfish – This recipe gives us +90 Crit and +90 Stamina.

Recipe: Basilisk Liverdog – At +90 Haste and +90 Stamina, the recipe is good for more focus regen issues and faster shots.

Recipe: Grilled Dragon – Again, if you notice your shots are missing a lot, this is the food buff you want to level with if you can’t manage to get Hit from gear.  It gives +90 Hit and +90 Stamina.

Cooking Recipes obtained beyond skill level 500

Recipe: Fortune Cookie – Meh. They make you feel good. No skill ups.

Achievement Awards

Recipe: Broiled Dragon Feast – Do I have time for this? 5,000 feasts?  Goblin Barbecue is looking more and more attractive and it can help you complete achievement.  It’s a guild achievement.

Recipe: Seafood Magnifique Feast – Seriously, 10,000 fish?  It’s a guild achievement.

Novelty Items aren’t as important as the above but still fun for a Hunter and could help you level cooking

Recipe: Chocolate Cookie – Available at cooking skill level 505. Can help you level to 510.  Cookies!

Recipe: South Island Iced Tea – We don’t use mana anymore but sounds refreshing.  Especially after looking at the 10,000 fish achievement.  The recipe is available at cooking skill level 525.  No skills ups.

Get recipes based on stat priorities or on ingredients you have readily available to help you level the profession.  I hope this helps you focus on what recipes Hunters should obtain first while leveling cooking.

Cataclysm: Engineering Hunter

4.0.6 EDIT:  Added in Synapse SpringsGnomish Gravity Well and Big Daddy!

4.0.3 EDIT:  Added in Elementium Dragonling.

From Northend

First off, Northend and the Wrath of the Lich King expansion gave us wonderful new abilities through items and tinkering. With patch 4.0.1 engineering tinkering stacked with regular enchants and patch 4.0.3 dropped the stat increases from tinkering. For Cataclysm we are going to still be using our valuable on use items and tinkering.

  1. Jeeves, Scrapbot Construction Kit, Gnomish Army Knife and MOLL-E will still be in our bags. Engineers will still be using Wormhole Generator: Northrend to return to Northend for Cobalt and Saronite in Cataclysm for the still useful Tinkering abilities.
  2. For rocketchuting the Flexweave Underlay and Nitro Boosts will be useful for running away and cliff diving. Mind Amplification Dish and Frag Belt will still be fun for PVP. Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket, Hyperspeed Accelerators, and Reticulated Armor Webbing will be useful for DPS and soloing while leveling to 85 or until you get your engineering to 525.
  3. Goblin Beam Welder will be useful for healing our new Elementium Dragonling.
  4. Personal Electromagnetic Pulse Generator will still be there for us while we farm Mechanicals for engineering items.

Engineering 450 and beyond

  1. Handful of Obsidium Bolts will be used to level engineering and do damage until you max out the profession and get to level 85.
  2. Electrostatic Condenser will always be in our bags and will help us collect Volatile Air which we need for Electrified Ether.
  3. R19 Threatfinder and Safety Catch Removal Kit will be our first set of scopes we will be able to make. They will increase Hit or Haste and the one you use will depend on what you need at the time.
  4. Volatile Seaforium Blastpack will be there for us when we encounter lock boxes.
  5. High-Powered Bolt Gun will consume Handful of Obsidium Bolts to do damage. Too bad it doesn’t help us build large buildings.
  6. Lure Master Tackle Box and Heat-Treated Spinning Lure will allow hunters to stack on fishing supplies and farm fish for more gold.
  7. Elementium Toolbox help us carry around all our new engineering stuff.
  8. Elementium Dragonling will help us bring in the boss kills.  I macro’d it in my Kill Shot.  The 252 mastery is what really helps.  Plus the mats aren’t terribly hard to come by.
  9. Loot-a-Rang will make Dwarf hunters more fat.
  10. When engineers hit level 83 we want to be sure we can make our first engineering range weapons, Finely-Tuned Throat Needler or Volatile Thunderstick.
  11. Depending on if you are a Gnomish or Goblin engineer you can get Gnomish Gravity Well (as of patch 4.0.6 it is broken) or Big Daddy ( a new bomb).
  12. The replacement for Fish Feast is now a engineering made item called Goblin Barbecue.
  13. Hunters finally get a weapon enchant that procs with their range weapon called Gnomish X-Ray Scope.
  14. The new belt enchants, Cardboard Assassin, Grounded Plasma Shield, Invisibility Field, Quickflip Deflection Plates and the new glove enchant Spinal Healing Injector will help you level and solo content. The Tazik Shocker or Synapse Springs will be there for you to help kill new bosses in 5-mans and raids.
  15. Kickback 5000 and Overpowered Chicken Splitter will be our next set of range weapons from engineering. Pick the weapon that best compliments your racial ability. Dwarves hunters please use the gun over the bow. If you use a bow as a dwarf consider yourself a noob.
  16. Deadly Bio-Optic Killshades will be used until we get our Tier 11 helm. The best thing about these is that they can be socketed with Fractured Cogwheel, Quick Cogwheel, Rigid Cogwheel, and Smooth Cogwheel depending on what you need. Use a spreadsheet like femaledwarf.com to figure out which works best for you.  Here is a comparison between the 2 helms.

I really hope we get more schematics throughout the expansion. So far I’m loving the new things we are getting.

Glyph of Mending buffed in Patch 4.0.1

EDIT:  I tested this out on the Live server and found out that the glyphed Mend Pet is a 60% increase over the unglyphed Mend Pet.  This proves hockeyhacker’s math right. I also collected the data and put it in a spreadsheet for easy comparison.  Using the spreadsheet’s data Mend Pet glyphed and talented heals 76% more health per tick than a naked Mend Pet.  Using Algebra I figured out that the Spirit Bond talent adds 10% to the glyph 8% per tick on Mend Pet.  Glyphed and talented Mend Pet heals 8.8% of the pets health every 2 sec.  Spirit Bond heals your pet 16% more while glyphed.

Here is the formula:

(x-5)/5 = 0.76.
x-5 = 3.8
x = 8.8

Read the comments on Wowhead. I will be going on later tonight or tomorrow to test this out myself.  Tested and verified.  I am currently using this glyph but I was soloing level 70 instances for mounts.  Didn’t think it was a buff either until I read the comments on Wowhead.  I love it there.  Can’t you tell?  I have the site linked on several places on this blog.

Mend Pet as a spell looks confusing but  look at the buff the spell casts.  The buff heals 5% of the pets health every 2 sec.  Increase this by 3% provided by the Glyph of Medning.  You get a Mend Pet that heals 8% of the pets health every 2 sec.

Here is the example that hockeyhacker gave:

Not nerfed but rather buffed…

before Mend pet healed x health depending on rank and glyph increased x by 40%

now Mend pet heals 25% total health over 10 seoncds or 5% per tick and the glyph increases that 3% total health per tick so now it heals 40% over 10 seconds…

Now for the example, lets say prior to the patch Mend pet rank x healed for 100 per tick un glyphed and now your pet has 2,000 health

Unglyphed prior to change it ticks for 100
Unglyphed post change it ticks for 100 (given the pet has 2K health I just set it at that health for easy comparison)

Glyphed prior to the change it now ticks for 140
Glyphed post change it now ticks for 160…

Now instead of a 40% boost on a flat x value, it is a 60% boost on your pets health.

Well I hope this helps.  I found it useful, too.  Just wanted to point out on the blog just in case some of you Young Guns don’t read the comments section on Wowhead.

Slowly everything is balancing out…

First.  Mania is a godsend and has been keeping track of all the pet changes that patch 4.0.1 has brought.  It’s been updated and is reflecting accurate information.  It’s not displaying old information from blue posts or data mined information from MMO-Champion.

Second.  Pets no longer display buffs or receive them but it appears that they still receive a stamina and strength from Spiced Mammoth Treats.

Third.  Raiding with my spirit beast or devilsaur is wonderful.  I worked so hard trying to find those rares and I finally get to use them to help me defeat the Lich King.  I hope these rares help me defeat more bosses in the future.

Using focus is a interactive process.  I’m constantly watching my focus bar and watching my shots.  Kill Command for BM hunters is like another shot and is number 2 on my action bar.  Moves like Fervor and Focus Fire should be used whenever you need to restore focus.

4.0.1 Addons – TellMeWhen

UPDATED FOR 4.0.1: Added in new abilities and buffs.  Got rid of the abilities that no longer exist.  Sorry the shots I set up on the middle bar is for my BM spec.  I might update this post later to include the other 2 hunter specs.

TellMeWhen is a great AddOn. You set it up so that when certain buffs are active, it displays big icons on your screen. If you are using the SpartanUI it also shrinks your action bars which makes them hard to see your shot cool downs. With TellMeWhen you can even display your shots and their cool down timers as big icons.

It lets you pull off your shots with easier timing and reapply your serpent sting when the proc from your tier 10 2-piece or 4-piece set bonus.

How to set up?

TellMeWhen uses the names of the shots, stings, or buffs you want to keep track of when they proc. For the names of the buffs you can get them from Wowhead. Remember the spell that is proc’d by the gear is different from the actual description on the item’s tooltip or name of the buff.

Look up the buff you want to keep track off on Wowhead.

Here is our tier 10 set. Ahn’Kahar Blood Hunter’s Battlegear

Then click on the 2 procs.

Item – Hunter T10 2P Bonus

Item – Hunter T10 4P Bonus

We are not typing “Item – Hunter T10 2P Bonus” into TellMeWhen.  If you scroll down you will see the name of the buff and a link to its description.

Exploit Weakness

Stinger

We can even set up our procs from our trinkets like Needle-Encrusted Scropion or Darkmoon Card: Greatnesss.

When you are done figuring out which buffs/shots you want to set up you can configure each buffs/shots to display in its own way.  My shots and buffs are set up in the following way:

Buff or Procs

Turn on “Enable Icon”

Icon type > Buff/Debuff

Buff or Debuff > Buff

Unit to watch > Player

Show when buff/debuff > Present

Turn on “Show Timer”

Debuff aka Stings

Turn on “Enable Icon”

Icon type > Buff/Debuff

Buff or Debuff > Debuff

Unit to watch > Target

Show when buff/debuff > Absent

Turn on “Show Timer”

Turn on “Only show if cast by self”

Shots

Turn on “Enable Icon”

Icon type > Reactive spell or ability

Show icon when > Usable

Here are the Procs and Shots I have set up for my Beast Mastery spec with the configuration exceptions:

Top Row – Tier 10 Buffs/Hunter Buffs/Pet Buffs

Exploit Weakness

Stinger

Cobra Strikes

Rapid Fire

Call of the Wild

Rabid Power – Buff from Rabid.  Unit to watch > Pet

Terrifying Roar – Any pet ability in this spot will be suffice.

Middle Row – Serpent Sting/Shots

Serpent Sting – remember this is a debuff.

Kill Command – Icon type > Cooldown, Show icon when > Always

Arcane Shot

Steady Shot

Kill Shot – Cooldown type > Reactive spell or ability, Turn on “Show Timer”, Cooldown type > Spell or ability

Fervor

Focus Fire – Icon type > Buff/Debuff

Bottom Row – Equipment Buffs/Talent Tree Buff/Pet Buff

Power of the Taunka

Agility of the Vrykul

Aim of the Iron Dwarves

Icy Rage

Frostforged Champion

Killing Streak

Culling the Herd

Set up bars however you like. Rows or columns.

I set up mine going horizontally across covering my toon but in the center of the screen.  You could probably set them up horizontally at the top of the screen or even vertically on the right side.  It is entirely up to you  and it might take some experimentation.  When I focus on DPS’ing my tunnel vision sets in so I don’t like haveing stuff like that on the side.

If they are taking up too much space and are just an eyesore configure the bars so they only show when you are in combat.

TellMeWhen is a great addon to keep track of buffs and shots.  It is one of the few I recommend.  I even took the time to write this blog post.  It means something to me.  It has helped increase my dps and watch for buffs that are important.  I hope it does the same to all you, Young Guns, out there.

Don’t forget to test your procs and shots on the test dummies before you head back into ICC.  If the icons don’t pop up on TellMeWhen’s action bar they could be broken because of a misspelled spell or buff, could be the wrong name for the buff, or wrong configuration(Cooldown, Buff/debuff, or Reactive spell or ability).

4.0.1 BM Hunter Macros

EDIT: Reflected the way my macros are in game as of 10/28/10.  Added some more explanation.

For all shots you are dropping Kill Command and Silencing Shot.  “/use 10” is for you to use your gloves if they have Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket or Hyperspeed Accelerators tinkered into them.

Shots
#showtooltip Arcane Shot
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Bestial Wrath
/use 10
/cast Arcane Shot

For Kill Shot I incorporated the Dwarf racial Stoneform but any racial that gives a damage buff will work too. I also included Cower. You don’t want to have your pet miss out on a Kill Command because your pet died.  The Glyph of Kill Shot is a powerful thing to have so get it.

Kill Shot
/use 10
/cast Rapid Fire
/cast Stoneform(Racial)
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Cower
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Call of the Wild
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Bestial Wrath
/use 13 – Activates trinkets if they have a on use buff.
/use 14
/cast Kill Shot

For the Hunter’s Mark macro I included the target line to help us focus on our kill priority for some of the ICC fights.

Hunter’s Mark
#showtooltip Hunter’s Mark
/target Bone Spike – Lord Marrowgar
/target Blood Beast – Saurfang
/target Blazing Skeleton – Valithria Dreamwalker
/cast Hunter’s Mark
/cast !track giants

Disengage
#showtooltip Disengage
/cast Disengage
/use 15 – Nitro Boosts
/cast Aspect of the Pack – Sindragosa
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()

Master’s Call macro is more for PVP use.

Master’s Call
#showtooltip Master’s Call
/cast [target=player] Master’s Call

Misdirection
#showtooltip Misdirection
/cast [target=focus, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=focustarget, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=target, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=targettarget, help] Misdirection
/cast [target=pet, nodead, exists] Misdirection

For pet heals I added in Cower and HotP if you run with that talented.

Pet heal/revive
#showtooltip Mend Pet
/castsequence [nopet] Revive Pet
/cast [modifier:shift] Dismiss Pet; [target=pet, dead] Revive Pet; Mend Pet
/cast Cower
/cast [pet:spirit beast] Heart of the Phoenix

If you run with a spirit beast here is a macro you could have on your action bar to heal yourself with Spirit Mend.

Spirit Beast Heal to Player
#showtooltip Spirit Mend
/target Player
/cast Spirit Mend

Notes

A few reminders:

  1. Dash is broken don’t spec into it.  In order for our Hunter to use Kill Command our pet has to be 5 yards from the mob.  Spec by adding a talent point into Natural Armor and sacrificing a talent point in Bloodthirsty for Charge.  Our pets talent trees should look like this spec.
  2. Hit cap has change and its now capped at 246 Hit.  It looks like its at 30 hit per 1% of hit rating.
  3. Everyone is still theory crafting.  All specs have about the same DPS.  I am not even worried about the other specs.  If you want to play MM or SV go for it.
  4. I spec like Frost.
  5. For stat priority its Hit > Agi > Crit > Haste.  For gemming its a little different.  For blue gem slots use Hit and Agi/Hit gems, you might only need 1 depending on your socket bonus.  I like to match socket bonuses so I have 3 Glinting Dreadstone on Guntitan right now.  Here are the blue gems you could use depending on what your hit is at without gems:  Rigid Stormjewel, Rigid Majestic Zircon, Glinting Dreadstone.  When it comes to gem slots always gem Agility and use Reforging to get the hit you need.  It is cheaper that way.  For red gem slots Delicate Stormjewel and Delicate Cardinal Ruby.  For Yellow sockets you can use Deadly Ametrine.
  6. For Reforging reforge into Mastery.  Its fun and not expensive at all.  Reforge Haste into Mastery.  Reforge Crit into Mastery if there is no Haste.  I reforged some of my crit into Mastery and only lost about 3% crit.
  7. Engineering tinkering is stacking with regular enchants.  For head slot put in both Mind Amplification Dish + Arcanum of Torment.  You can’t use the mind control if your pet is out.  For the hand slot use Hyperspeed Accelerators or Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket + Enchant Gloves – Superior Agility.  For the boot slot use Enchant Boots – Superior Agility + Nitro Boosts.  For your back slot use Enchant Cloak – Superior AgilityFlexweave Underlay.
  8. Our AOE is not broken.  Use Multi-Shot with Snake Trap, either fire trap and  a Worm’s Burrow Attack.
  9. Add Killing Streak to your TellMeWhen buff bar.

Dash is borked! Engineering enchants stack!

Dash is broken.  Don’t spec into it.  The spell disappears from your pet’s spell book on its own.

Engineering enchants stack and armory doesn’t work so I can’t show you out of the game.  Log onto Dalvengyr and I’ll show you.  I hope this change stays because Jewelcrafter’s still get kick ass gems in Blacksmith slots.  Enchanters get all the enchants plus the ones to their rings.  Its only fair that everything would start to stack.  I really hope it stays.  Engineering deserves it.

Beta is not canon. Everything pet related online is wrong.

Go into the game and start taming. Currently all of the sites I go to learn about Pets are wrong. Exotics have 2 abilities and a lot of them aren’t listed. More later…

Edit:

My world server for Northend is down.  So I can’t do this myself atm.  Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get to do it.

Catastrophic Patch 4.0.1 is Live

Evil…

No seriously…

Evil…

What does this patch mean for Hunters?

  1. You probably want to buy all the glyphs you possibly you can for your Hunter.  We have 3 tiers of glyphs we can use and we will be using them.  They no longer get destroyed, too.
  2. We need to figure out the best possible dps spec all over again.  Even though the Hunter’s Union said that all 3 specs’ dps is really close.  Frost is covering all the changes and what he thinks are the best dps glyphs and talents to use per spec.  So please head over there since I have not spent the time testing out the changes.  As you can see I’m still updating.
  3. BM hunters are back for raiding.
  4. Put Tame Beast back on your action bar.  We are a utility class and now our pets bring all if not most buffs we use for raiding.  Boo yah!  Go tame 1 pet of every family.  Maybe not that many here is short list.  We have 25 stable slots and it’s time to fill it.
  5. More health, more armor, and better pet scaling.  We are tougher than ever and more than likely still a priority target for PVP.  Sad.

I’m glad the patch is live.  There is a guild raid tonight so we’ll see how it goes.

There is a new resource for all classes at WoWTal.com.

I would like to say, “Thanks!” to MMO-Champion.com for creating the site and for keeping us up to date on all the changes.  To Frost too and the guys at the OutDPS! podcast for testing these changes and for also keeping us up to date.
